The 23-year-old from Wisconsin is accused of having killed and mutilated his parents, reports the news agency AP.
According to prosecutors, he killed them because they revealed his secret.
According to the indictment, Chandler Halderson told his parents that he would soon graduate as an engineer at the prestigious Madison Area Technical College (MATC).
He also told them that he worked for the insurance company American Family Insurance (AFI) – and that he had gotten a job at Elon Musk’s much talked about space company SpaceX in Florida.
Everything was a lie.

Discovered by chance
With fake e-mail addresses, he wrote according to the indictment several dozen fake e-mails which were apparently from MATC and AFI.
Thus, according to the indictment, he made his father believe all the lies.
By chance, the father discovered the truth and confronted Chandler Halderson, who had neither a job nor went to school, with this.
According to the prosecution, this led to two brutal killings.

The trial against Halderson in Madison, Wisconsin, began on Tuesday.
He is charged with two counts of premeditated murder, two counts of mutilation and two counts of concealment, as well as two counts of perjury.
In court, the prosecutor claimed that Chandler Halderson shot his father, Bart Halderson (50), in the back on 1 July last year.
According to the prosecutor, this happened shortly after the father had discovered that his son had lied to him.
His father died shortly after he was shot.
When the 23-year-old’s mother, Krista Halderson (53), returned home a few hours later, she was also shot and killed.

Prosecutors believe that Chandler Halderson killed and dismembered his parents, before transporting the remains to two different locations and trying to hide them.
Chandler Halderson, on the other hand, believes he has nothing to do with this.
This was stated by his lawyer Catherine Dorl in court according to Wisconsin State Journal:
– He’s just a normal kid who likes to play. He did not kill his parents.

Only six days after the killings, Chandler Halderson reported the parents missing.
He told police his parents had not returned from a weekend getaway at a cabin in Dane County.
On June 8, seven days after he was killed, the remains of Bart Halderson were found in Dane County.
The same day, Chandler Halderson was arrested.
Six days after the arrest, Krista Halderson was found dead along the Wisconsin River.

Chandler Halderson’s father is said to have questioned why his son never had money if he had a job.
After Bart Halderson chatted with a real MATC employee, the lie was exposed.
Bart Halderson confronted his son with this, and that was when, according to the indictment, he was shot and killed.
A few hours later, Krista Halderson suffered the same fate.

In court, prosecutor William Brown reached out to Chandler Halderson.
– He did not even give them dignity by giving them a funeral or a final resting place in one part, or together. Their remains were scattered everywhere, he said.
The trial against Chandler Halderson is expected to last for three weeks.
