According to American press, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who was trying for a second time for a presidential nomination, suspended the campaign. On social media, the Democrat summoned supporters to an online ad, where he guaranteed that even though the campaign ended, “the fight for justice continues”.
The 78-year-old senator acknowledges that “the road to victory is virtually impossible” and thus “the battle for the Democratic nomination will not be successful”.
“We were never just a campaign. We are a movement that believes that change does not come from top to bottom, but from bottom to top,” he said. “The campaign ends, but our movement does not.”
The senator says he will work with Joe Biden, “a very decent man”.
Sanders, a “democratic socialist”, was looking for the Democratic Party nomination for the November presidential elections. The way is now open for Joe Biden – the only candidate for the Democratic nomination left – to face Donald Trump. Biden, a former vice president of Barack Obama, was already naming the nomination a favorite.
The senator started the Democratic primaries with some encouraging victories, but he had a major setback in the so-called “Tuesday” on March 3, when he lost many of the 15 elections at stake that day, leaving Joe Biden with a comfortable accounting advantage of delegates.
Bernie Sanders’ announcement comes at a time when the United States is the country most affected by the covid-19 pandemic.
At this stage, Sanders had already focused all of his political interventions on the public health crisis caused by the Covid-19 outbreak, referring to the need for the US Government to ensure that the most vulnerable are protected from the economic damage of this pandemic.
In the last elections, Sanders lost his nomination to Hillary Clinton, who ended up defeated at the polls by Republican Donald Trump. The current American president has already reacted on Twitter, saying that another Democratic candidate is to blame: Elizabeth Warren.
“Bernie Sanders is OUT! Thanks to Elizabeth Warren. If it wasn’t for her, Bernie would have won all the states on Super Tuesday! This ended just as the Democrats and DNC wanted, just like the Crooked Hillary fiasco [Clinton]. Bernie’s supporters should come to the Republican Party, CHANGE! “Wrote Donald Trump.
Since March 18, Sanders has been evaluating his permanence in the race, after a new series of defeats in the Democratic primaries.
The announcement made by his campaign came after Joe Biden won the race in the three states (Arizona, Florida, and Illinois) that went to elections at that time, further distancing himself in the race that will decide who is the Democratic presidential candidate.
“Senator Sanders will speak with his supporters to assess the conditions of his campaign. For now, however, he is focused on the authorities ‘response to the coronavirus outbreak, to ensure that workers’ rights are guaranteed, ”said campaign director Faiz Shakir at the time.
