US Veto of UN Gaza Strip Ceasefire Proposal Criticized by Hamas and Human Rights Watch

Hamas calls it “unethical and inhumane” that the United States vetoed a UN proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Friday. Human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) is also critical of the American voice.

UN chief António Guterres had urged the Security Council this week for a ceasefire on humanitarian grounds so that the Palestinian population can receive aid. The United States blocked that proposal. Great Britain abstained, the remaining thirteen members were in favour.

“By blocking the proposal, the Americans are participating in the killings and massacres,” Hamas said in a statement.

Human Rights Watch’s UN representative, Louis Charbonneau, also responds to the US veto. The US risks being “complicit in war crimes” by continuing to provide Israel with weapons and “diplomatic cover” while the country commits “atrocities” in Gaza, Charbonneau said.

US UN Ambassador Robert Wood told the Security Council that his country does not support the resolution, because the proposed ceasefire ‘will only sow the seeds of another war’. He also called the proposed resolution ‘unbalanced’ and ‘far from reality’. The Americans also wanted to see a clear condemnation of the October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians included in the text. (ANP/Editorial)
