US Troops To Take Over Kabul Airport Air Traffic

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense United States of America announced that its forces would take over air traffic control at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The takeover was to ensure the safe evacuation of US embassy staff diplomats from the Afghan capital Taliban succeeded in occupying Kabul and the presidential palace.

“Tomorrow and in the coming days, we will be moving thousands of Americans living in Afghanistan overseas, as well as US mission staff employed locally in Kabul, and their families and other highly vulnerable Afghan nationals,” the joint statement said. the institution, quoted from CNN, Monday (16/8).

They will also expedite the evacuation of thousands of Afghans who qualify for special US visas. Nearly 2,000 of them arrived in Uncle Sam’s country over the past two weeks, the statement continued.

“All categories of Afghans who have passed the security screening will continue to be transferred directly to the United States. And we will find additional locations for those who have not been screened.”

To speed up the evacuation of diplomats and citizens from Afghanistan, the US agreed to add 1,000 personnel. This brings the total troops sent to the country to 6,000.

Additional troops were from the 82nd Airborne group heading to Kuwait. They were sent due to the deteriorating security situation.

Their main mission is the security of Kabul’s international airport, which is an entry point for troops and an exit point for US embassy staff and Afghans leaving the country.

To date, there are about 3,000 US troops in Afghanistan. Another 3,000 personnel are reportedly on their way.

The US military has a maximum capacity to move about 5,000 people per day from Kabul’s international airport. But now they have not been able to move that amount. They can only reach that capacity in the next few days.
