US Supreme Court confirms that leaked abortion document is genuine – NRK Urix – Foreign news and documentaries

Roberts clarifies that the leaked document does not represent a final decision.

It was the American online newspaper Politico that published the leaked draft from the Supreme Court.

In the draft, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito writes that Roe v. The Wade ruling from 1973 was a “shocking mistake from the very beginning”. It also appears that five out of nine Supreme Court justices will overturn the verdict.

Roberts confirms that an investigation into the leak has been initiated. He describes the leak as a gross breach of trust.

– To the extent that this betrayal of the court’s trust was intended to undermine our integrity, it will not succeed. The work of the Supreme Court will not be affected in any way, the Supreme Court judge said in a statement on Tuesday.

Several states will restrict the rights

In November, a by-election will be held in the United States. President Joe Biden says voters must make sure they vote for politicians who want freedom of choice for women, if the US Supreme Court removes the right to abortion.

Biden believes that many rights could be jeopardized if the US Supreme Court revokes the federal right to abortion, including gay rights to marriage.

On Thursday, the state of Oklahoma passed a law banning abortion after the sixth week.

If the majority in the court wants to repeal the federal right to abortion, it may seem that the judges want to give the states more authority to enact stricter abortion laws themselves.

26 states have stated that they will restrict the rights to self-determined abortionif the Supreme Court reverses the almost fifty-year-old verdict.

Several states have already made it far more difficult for women to have abortions.

In September, a new law came into force in Texas, which bans abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy.

Last week, the state of Oklahoma also passed a law banning abortion after the sixth week, according to CNN.

The news has led to protests and demonstrations.
