Tehran- The United States seized a Boeing 747 cargo plane sold to Iran by Venezuela’s official airline. Tehran condemned the incident.
The US Department of Justice announced late Monday that the plane had been taken into custody. Washington says Iran’s Mahan Air 2022 sale of planes to Venezuela violates sanctions against Tehran.
Mahan Airlines was sanctioned after it was found to have links with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Washington said Mahan Air’s sale of the plane to Venezuela’s Emtrasur violated sanctions.
“Mahan Air plays a major role in supplying arms and fighters to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah. Violated export restrictions by selling plane to Venezuelan cargo airline Now, it is the property of the US government,” Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement Matthew S. Axelrod said in a statement.
