US Secretary of State Blinken Expresses Concern Over High Toll on Gaza Civilians
JERUSALEM – In the midst of ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed concern over the high toll on Gaza civilians. Blinken, who is currently in the region attempting to broker a cease-fire, acknowledged that Israel’s military offensive is “fully justified” in response to a deadly Hamas cross-border attack on October 7. However, he emphasized the need to address the effects of the offensive on innocent civilians.
The Israeli offensive has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties and has displaced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. Blinken stated, “The daily toll that its military operations continue to take on innocent civilians remains too high.” This statement reflects the growing international concern over the impact of the conflict on Gaza’s civilian population.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, rejected Hamas’ terms for a cease-fire and hostage-release agreement. He vowed to continue the war until “absolute victory” and dismissed any arrangement that would leave Hamas in control of Gaza. Netanyahu believes that military pressure is the most effective way to free the approximately 100 hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
