US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will visit Bulgaria on his trip to Europe this week, which will focus on supporting NATO allies in the raging war along its eastern border with Ukraine, the Pentagon said today, Reuters reported.

Tomorrow, Austin will travel to Brussels to take part in a NATO meeting, after which he will visit Slovakia, the US Department of Defense said, BTA reports.

In Bulgaria, Austin will meet with military and civilian leaders, the Pentagon said without giving further details.

Bulgaria, Moscow’s closest ally during the Cold War, is now a member of the European Union and NATO, which has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reports.
