US monkeypox outbreak hits 10,000 cases

LOS ANGELES (ANTARA) – The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox in the United States (US) surpassed 10,000, to be exact, 10,392 cases, as of Wednesday (10/8), according to the latest data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/CDC).

Data from the country’s national public health agency showed that 1,391 confirmed cases of monkeypox were reported as of Wednesday.

This is the first time the CDC has reported more than 1,000 cases of monkeypox in a day since the first case was reported on May 17.

Confirmed cases in the US still account for nearly 30 percent of the total global cases, which so far stands at 31,800 cases, even though the country’s population is less than 5 percent of the world’s population.

The Biden government on Thursday (4/8) last week declared monkeypox a public health emergency, more than a week after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a global emergency.

Critics say US authorities are acting too slowly and unable to meet demand for a vaccine as the number of cases continues to grow.

California State Senator Scott Wiener said the federal government should be able to stockpile the Jynneos vaccine, the smallpox or variola vaccine that has proven effective against monkeypox.
