US court blocks “stay in Trump | Mexico policy.” Abroad

Almost 60,000 asylum seekers have been sent back to Mexico since the introduction of the so-called “stay in Mexico” policy. They sometimes live there in tent camps. The federal court of appeal in San Francisco ruled that the policy is contrary to rules on migrant rights.

The same court also rejected another government’s asylum measure on Friday. This made it impossible for migrants to apply for asylum if they had crossed the border illegally, without reporting to an official border crossing.

Trump sees reducing illegal migration as a spearhead. During his election campaign in 2016, he promised to build a wall on the border with Mexico and to have that neighbor pay for the construction.

The judgment of the court is a setback for Trump, but does not necessarily mean that his asylum measures are definitively abolished. According to observers, the matter is probably also being referred to the Supreme Court.
