US Considers Recognizing Russia as State Sponsor of Terrorism for Support of Non-State Terrorist Groups

Democratic congressman Ted Lew reportedly presented the document. Previously, a bill recognizing Russia as a sponsor of terrorism was put forward for a vote in September 2022.

The new document says that Russia repeatedly provided support to non-state terrorist groups before and during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

As of today, the US list of state sponsors of terrorism includes Syria, North Korea, Cuba and Iran. Assigning this status to a country allows the United States to impose additional sanctions, introduces a complete embargo on the sale of weapons and dual-use goods, and also withhold economic assistance.

US may recognize Russia as state sponsor of terrorism

On the anniversary of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the Verkhovna Rada called on the parliaments of other countries to recognize the genocide of Ukrainians, and Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

According to adviser to the head of the Office of the President Mikhail Podolyak, the recognition of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism is already having a significant impact on its foreign policy, in particular in the economic sphere.

In turn, the US State Department did not rule out recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism for crimes committed during the invasion of Ukraine.
