US congratulates new Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau

“The US and of course President Obama congratulate Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau on the victory of the Liberal party in the elections,” said Josh Earnest, spokesman for the US executive.

Earnest added that Washington will work in concert with Trudeau on crucial issues like global warming.

Canada has “made an important and substantial commitment to the climate change negotiations in Paris,” where the major COP21 world conference will take place in December, Earnest added.

COP21 wants to limit the increase in the planet’s temperature to a maximum of 2ºC by cutting gas emissions in the coming decades.

The White House spokesman said he hopes the new Canadian government will go further on that issue than the current Prime Minister, Conservative Stephen Harper.

“We think Canada may be able to do more in this regard,” he said.

The Liberal party (center) won a landslide victory in the Canadian election on Monday as Trudeau will spearhead the formation of a new government, ending ten years of conservative mandates.

Liberals will have an absolute majority in both houses of Parliament.

The White House also expressed that it is “deeply grateful” for Harper’s work in “building a strong relationship between the United States and Canada.”
