It was quick to get in and out of the car when Camilla Vistnes (39) visited Death Valley at the weekend. The temperature gauge in the car touched the world record for heat. Now the heat wave is also sweeping over the United States.

Look at the picture below. It shows the temperature gauge in the rental car that Camilla Vistnes and her family took into Death Valley on Saturday.

134 degrees fahrenheit – that’s 56.6667 degrees celcius.

It’s not just hot. It is record hot. The hottest thing to have been measured anywhere in the world is precisely Death Valley. The year was 1913 and the temperature was measured at 56.7 degrees Celsius, a hair above the rental car’s 2023 measurement.

HOT HOT HOT: In 1913 some poor souls measured 143.1 degrees fahrenheit in Death Valley. 110 years later, Camilla Vistnes’ rental car measured almost the same. Photo: Private

– I was a little scared when I saw how many degrees it was: If the car breaks down, what do we do? It would have been useless to lay down in the shade under the car, because it was too hot there, says Vistnes on the phone to VG.

She, her partner and two children are still on tour in the USA.

There were quick visits to the open air. The heat that hit them gave them a high pulse and difficulty breathing, she says.

– It was as if someone was holding a giant hairdryer on us. It was very special, and fun that we were there that day.

In advance, it was expected that the valley in the Mojave Desert, in southern California, would have melting temperatures at the weekend.

The national weather service sent out a warning about “life-threatening heat” on Saturday.

– This will lead to an extreme risk of heat-related illnesses for anyone who is exposed to the heat for an extended period, it says in the notice.

Vistnes says that they heard the same warnings.

– It was advised against going out after 10 o’clock in the morning.

– What do you think about those who complain about the heat wave in Europewhich is at least 13 degrees colder than what you experienced?

– We don’t laugh at it at all. Forty degrees is too hot, too. People need to be careful and take care of themselves and each other. I don’t think everyone quite knows what can happen to the body when it gets so hot, says Vistnes.

On Saturday, the National Weather Service measured 51.67 degrees in the area. The car of the family from Kleppe found a place that was much warmer than that.

– There is a place called “Artists’s Way”, a place where the mountain is extra colorful. Start Wars number four was filmed here, says Vistnes.

When VG talks to her, the family has moved to a colder place.

– Now we are in Mammoth Lakes, a ski resort. There is actually still snow on the slopes here, even though the temperature is approaching 30 degrees.
