WASHINGTON – The government of the United States (US) has requested Israel to send the long-stored Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine to fight the invasion Russia .

That was revealed by three Israeli and US officials to Axioswhich was launched on Thursday (26/1/2023).

Tel Aviv has so far rejected most of Washington’s and Kiev’s requests to provide advanced and defensive weaponry to Ukraine. This is because the Jewish state fears that such a move could create tension with Moscow and harm Israel’s security interests in Syria.

Russia has enormous influence in Syria, but Moscow has reportedly allowed Israel to operate freely against Iranian activity there.

Regarding the Hawk missile system, Israel is known to have purchased it from the US in the 1960s to defend against Egyptian and Syrian air attacks.

At that time, the anti-aircraft system developed by Raytheon was the latest technology.

But in recent years, Israel has turned to other systems, including the US Patriot defense system and its own Iron Dome and Arrow defense systems.

A decade ago, the Israeli military retired the Hawk system.

A senior Israeli official told Axios that around 10 Hawk batteries and hundreds of interceptor missiles are still stored in Israel.
