US and Taliban agreement on “reduced violence” in Afghanistan

Next week, on February 29, a peace agreement must be signed. It would then be the first time that the Americans have reached an agreement with the Taliban, the largest armed group in Afghanistan. About 12,000 American soldiers are still active in the country. If a deal comes, they will be partially recovered.

Minister Pompeo said earlier that a peace agreement is the prelude to a permanent ceasefire in the country. Afghanistan has been plagued by war for twenty years. During his election in 2016, President Trump promised to end American involvement in the country.

Afghan negotiations

The peace agreement must in the long run be the start of peace negotiations between Afghan parties. It is unclear who will participate in the Afghan negotiations and when they will start. The Taliban refused to negotiate with the Ghani government and rejected the election results.
