Washington (CNN) – American F-22 stealth aircraft and Canadian CF-18 fighters intercepted two Russian reconnaissance planes while flying off the coast of Alaska, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
The interception occurs amid continued tensions between the US and Russian military, as US officials have expressed concern about the increase in Russian military activity in the Arctic.
The two Russian maritime reconnaissance aircraft TU-142 entered the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone on Monday, but did not enter the US or Canadian airspace, remained “in the international airspace above the Beaufort Sea, and arrived so about 50 nautical miles to the coast of Alaska, ”according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD.
