Unvaccinated in Austria could be identified as a “bow down” – Abroad – News

“It is already clear that this winter and Christmas will not be convenient for those who have not been vaccinated,” Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said in Bregenz on Thursday.

Given the speed of the fourth wave of the pandemic, it could only be a matter of days before the unvaccinated are given a strict curfew regime, the chancellor added.

The fact that only 65% of Austrians have been vaccinated is a “shamefully low” level, Schallenberg said, urging people to be vaccinated without delay.

11,975 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Austria during the day, a record high since the start of the pandemic, according to official estimates.

The number of infections per 100,000 population in seven days has reached 751, which is three times more than in neighboring Germany.

The situation in hospitals has deteriorated, but doctors are calling for tougher measures.

Opposition Social Democrats are urging an immediate primary vaccination campaign to break the wave of infection.

Health Minister Wolfgang Mikstein’s previous efforts to impose regional “arcades” on the unvaccinated, at least in the worst-affected provinces of Upper Austria and Salzburg, have failed due to resistance from local leaders.

The federal government, regional authorities and experts will discuss the new measures at a meeting on Friday.
