Unusually High Number of Dolphins Found Dead in Brazilian Amazon: Possible Link to Extreme Water Temperatures and Drought

More than 100 dolphins have been found dead in the Brazilian Amazon in recent days. This is reported by the Mamirauá Institute, which is funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Research.

The institute says that the number is unusually high and that it may be due to record high water temperatures and a historic drought affecting the Amazon.

– It is too early to establish any cause for this extreme event, but our experts are however clear that it can be linked to the record high temperatures in Lake Tefé and the drought. In some places in Tefé, 39 degrees have been measured, says a spokesperson for the institute CNN.

According to the channel, scientists and activists are trying to save dolphins by transferring them from lagoons and ponds where the temperature rises, to the main part of the river where the water flows and is cooler. But it must be difficult.

It is not appropriate to transfer the dolphins to other rivers due to disease that can spread.

According to Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva, 56 out of 62 municipalities in the Amazon state are now threatened by the drought. The government is working with local authorities to supply the affected areas with food, drinking water and medicine.

In addition to the drought affecting fishing, it makes it very difficult to transport goods on the rivers, which means that many struggle to get hold of food and water.

– We expect that around 300,000 packages of food will be needed to ensure that the population meets their basic needs, says Silva.

The state is located in the north-west of Brazil and is the country’s largest in terms of area. It encompasses much of the Amazon rainforest and is home to around four million people, most of them from indigenous groups.
