Unusual Effects of an Annular Solar Eclipse: Temperature Drop, Wind Direction Change, Animal Behavior, and Radio Wave Disruptions

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — An annular solar eclipse is predicted to take place on October 14 and 15 2023. This annular solar eclipse can only be seen directly in the United States. However, people who are curious can see it online on NASA’s YouTube.

Moment solar eclipse progress, there are a number of strange but real things that can happen. A solar eclipse occurs when the position moon located between the earth and the sun. As a result, the moon blocks some or all of the sunlight in the earth’s sky.

“Even though it’s not a total solar eclipse, an eclipse can still cause some strange and unnatural effects,” said astronomer Tyler Nordgren. Here are some of these unusual things, quoted from the page Live ScienceSaturday (14/10/2023).

1. Cooler temperatures

Prepare a jacket when an eclipse occurs, because the air temperature can drop quickly. The rate of decline depends on the location, time and type of eclipse. During a total solar eclipse, the temperature drop is usually around 2.8 to 5.6 degrees Celsius.

During an annular eclipse (when the sun appears like a “ring of fire”), the temperature change is less extreme, but it may still feel colder. “It felt like there were clouds covering the sun. But there were no clouds over the sun, which just added to the strangeness,” said Nordgren.

2. Change in wind direction

As the temperature decreases, the area experiencing the eclipse may also experience a change in wind direction. A study published in 2016 explains that the wind subsides as the moon gets closer to blocking the sun. Once the moon reaches its peak coverage, the wind begins to blow again. However, it often blows in a different direction. This effect occurs in total, annular, and even partial eclipses.

3. Strange behavior of a number of animals

When the sky suddenly darkens in the middle of the day, some animals can become very confused. The cicada-like crepuscular creatures thought it was night and began to chirp. Cows and horses may go to sleep, while birds return to their roosts.

4. Random radio waves

Both total eclipses and annular eclipses disrupt certain radio wave frequencies, and no one knows for sure why. Scientists suspect this may have something to do with the way the sun interacts with Earth’s ionosphere, which is known to fluctuate in response to things like solar flares and solar storms.
