“Unsolved Mystery: Woman from Freiburg, Murdered in a Corn Field 30 Years Ago”

The murder of a 50-year-old woman from Freiburg in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf seems to have been solved. The trail leads to an already imprisoned child killer.

The alleged murderer of a 50-year-old woman from Freiburg, whose body was found 31 years ago in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf, is said to be a convicted child murderer.

Man convicted of murdering student

The man had already been convicted 25 years ago for the murder of a twelve-year-old schoolgirl by the regional court in Tübingen. This was announced by a spokeswoman for the Düsseldorf district court of the German Press Agency (dpa). The car mechanic stabbed the girl in 1995 in Bad Liebenzell in Baden-Württemberg.

Investigators are sure they found the culprit

The Düsseldorf investigators are now convinced that he also committed the murder three years earlier in Meerbusch near Düsseldorf. How they managed to solve the so-called “cold case” they want to reveal early this afternoon.

What happened?

In August 1992, the 50-year-old from Freiburg was found dead in a corn field on the Rhine in Meerbusch. The murder victim, a tourist guide, was walking in the Rheinauen at the time and must have met her murderer. At the time, investigators assumed it was a sex murder. Witnesses had seen the tour guide on the Rhine dike – accompanied by a man. The investigators suspected at the time that it could have been her later killer, who was already threatening the woman with a knife. All attempts to find it failed at the time. The place of discovery should also be the scene of the crime. The woman from Freiburg im Breisgau was killed with several knife wounds.

What is known about the alleged perpetrator?

31 years later, a 63-year-old suspect had been identified, the authorities announced on Tuesday. The man is already in prison for another felony. Charges have now also been brought against him for the 1992 murder, so he is likely to face trial again in the near future. He has so far remained silent about the new allegations, said the court spokeswoman on request.

It was later proven that he was murdered

After the murder in Bad Liebenzell in 1995, the mechanic was initially only convicted of manslaughter. Only in a retrial three years later did the judges assume sexual motives and sentenced him to life imprisonment for murder. The judgment was later confirmed by the Federal Court of Justice. The man had denied the crime.

“Cold Cases” still in focus

For several years, retired murder investigators in North Rhine-Westphalia have been digging into the files of older murder cases that have not yet been solved. For this purpose, the special organizational structure “Cold Case” was founded in the State Criminal Police Office. If they find approaches that could solve the case, they contact the responsible homicide squad.
