United Nations Security Council (DK PBB) rejected the proposed resolution Russia regarding the ceasefire between the militias Hamas Palestine and Israel recently came into conflict.

Reported Associated Pressthe UN Security Council rejected the resolution proposed by Russia because the Kremlin condemned violence and terrorism against civilians, but did not condemn Hamas’ actions in attacking Israel.

Only four countries agreed to the resolution. They include China, the United Arab Emirates, Mozambique and Gabon.

Four other countries refused, namely the United States, Britain, France and Japan. Meanwhile, six countries abstained, namely Albania, Brazil, Ecuador, Ghana, Malta and Switzerland.

Because it did not reach a unanimous vote, the UN Security Council failed to respond to the Hamas vs Israel war which broke out on October 7. To approve the resolution itself, a minimum of nine votes of support are needed from the 15-member council.

Britain’s ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward, said it was “unreasonable for the UN council to ignore the largest terror attack in Israel’s history”.

Woodward said that because the Russian proposal was rejected, negotiations would continue on the Brazilian proposal. In the Brazilian resolution, all acts of violence, hostility and terror against civilians are strongly condemned. Brazil’s resolution also “unequivocally rejects and condemns the heinous terrorist attack by Hamas.”

It is not known whether the UNSC will vote or not on this Brazilian resolution.

Responding to this rejection, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said the UNSC was “again hostage” to the selfishness of Western countries. He assessed that the UNSC failed to send a collective message aimed at reducing “the most serious explosion of violence in recent decades.”

The United States Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, also responded by saying that Hamas was carrying out terror against Israel, but the Russian resolution did not mention this.

“By not condemning Hamas, Russia is providing cover to a terrorist group that tortures innocent civilians,” he said.

Russia’s own draft resolution calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire with a long period and to be respected by each side.

The resolution strongly condemns “all violence and hostility directed against civilians and all acts of terrorism.”
