Almost everyone chooses one supplier
According to the most recent VREG market monitor report from 2021, 92 percent of households indicate that they have the same supplier for electricity and natural gas. Many people are not aware that they can turn to different players for both forms of energy.
Naturally, the energy suppliers themselves try to ensure that you opt for the total package. Anyone who performs a simulation on their websites is often immediately presented with the joint price for electricity and natural gas. Energy suppliers also like to make it appear that a bundled offer is cheaper. But is that also the case?
Energy suppliers use different tricks to bind you to them: this article unravels their strategy.
Cheapest natural gas ≠ cheapest electricity
An analysis of estimated annual prices in May shows that TotalEnergies offers the most attractive natural gas tariff with Pixel, but that the electricity price from the same supplier is not among the top three cheapest on the market.
You pay the least by combining the TotalEnergies natural gas contract with the Mega electricity rate (Group Green Flex). With fixed rates, the price sequence also looks different for electricity and natural gas.
You should also bear in mind that price differences not only arise between suppliers themselves, but also between the contracts of the same supplier. These differences may be due to the variety of services and options that suppliers offer with their contracts. Contracts with a mainly online service are usually cheaper than formulas with telephone support and correspondence.
NB: The social tariff was called for by many, but this financial allowance is now being withdrawn for some 400,000 families. From July 1, you will again pay the ‘full pot’ to use electricity and gas. This means that you pay hundreds of euros more for energy every year. Is there a solution to escape a financial downer?
What influence does the injection rate have?
For owners of solar panels and a digital meter, the injection rate is also a determining factor. With almost all energy suppliers you will only receive a payment for your generated power if you have also concluded a consumption contract.
That injection rate may also change the proportions, since the energy supplier with the lowest consumption rate does not necessarily pay the highest injection rate.

What about the administrative hassle?
In many cases, therefore, savings are waiting for you by separating the energy suppliers for natural gas and electricity. The fact that it doesn’t happen more often can be attributed to the ‘convenience’ factor.
However, switching is always easy. If you want to change supplier, you just need to sign a contract with another supplier. So you don’t have to cancel your current contract. Your new supplier will arrange everything for you.
