Thunder room sponsor placed in backup procedure

Sponsor of the Thunder hall, the Chesapeake Energy Corporation, has just gone through a backup procedure to avoid disappearing. Hit hard by the Covid-19 crisis, the company finds itself in insolvency because of the drop in oil and gas prices it extracts from the soil of Oklahoma. ESPN evokes a debt of nine billion dollars!

This Oklahoma energy giant was co-founded by the late Aubrey McClendon, former owner of the Thunder, who supports the Sonics’ move to Oklahoma. This company gave its name to the Thunder Hall in 2011, and the contract runs until 2023. Each year, Chesapeake Energy Corporation pays more than three million to the franchise for “naming” rights.

« We are completely transforming the capital structure and activities of Chesapeake to remedy our inherited financial weaknesses and capitalize on our operational strengths“Said CEO Doug Lawler in a statement. ” By eliminating approximately $ 7 billion in debt and meeting the legacy contractual obligations that adversely affected our performance, we are ensuring that Chesapeake can capitalize on our diverse operating platform and our proven track record in capital improvement, operational efficiency and technical excellence. Thanks to these proven advantages, and the advantage of an appropriate size structure, Chesapeake will be particularly well placed to get out of this safeguarding procedure into a stronger and more competitive company. »

On the Thunder side, we did not wish to comment on this information, but it is therefore not certain that the room will keep its name if the Chesapeake Energy Corporation is unable to honor its 11-year contract with the franchise.
