Unlike Covid-19, Why Did the SARS Outbreak End Without a Vaccine? This is what the doctor said

Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA Although both are caused by the Corona virus, SARS and Covid-19 are actually different. In the past, the symptoms of SARS were relatively more severe and the mortality percentage was also higher when compared to Covid-19. However, have you ever thought about why SARS used to just end without a vaccine, and why Covid-19 couldn’t be eliminated in the same way?

SARS stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or severe acute respiratory syndrome.

“It is caused by SARS-CoV-1 which is still a cousin to SARS-CoV-2 (the cause of Covid-19). We’re both the Corona virus,” wrote Dr Samuel PK Sembiring, a doctor and health educator on his Instagram account, Monday (27/9/2021).

This SARS disease first appeared in late 2002 in Guangdong, China, identified in early 2003 and ended in mid-2004.

This SARS disease seems to just disappear, without a vaccine. Why is that so? What’s the secret recipe? Then can Covid-19 disappear in the same way?

Actually, Dr. Sam explained, the vaccine for SARS had been started before. Vaccine trials are in the first phase of clinical trials. However, the SARS outbreak was over, so the research was discontinued.

There are several reasons why the SARS outbreak could be eliminated.

1. Obedient to wear a mask for fear of being infected with SARS

SARS has relatively more severe symptoms, with an incubation period of 2 to 7 days. The death rate is also higher than Covid-19.

“It’s natural that people who are in areas with a high number of SARS cases are quite obedient to wearing masks,” said Dr. Sam.

At that time, there was no term OTG or people without symptoms. Unlike the Covid-19 disease, which can be asymptomatic.

2. Strict quarantine

Everyone who is infected with SARS is strictly isolated, so that the transmission of SARS is very controllable. Meanwhile, people continue to use masks as a health protocol.

“On the other hand, during the current epidemic, OTG is roaming around a lot. “Covid-19 patients who have been asked to isolate themselves at home are not really self-isolating,” he said.

3. Good tracking

Because it is symptomatic, SARS is easy to spot. Generally, SARS patients show symptoms about 2 to 3 days or at most 7 days after exposure. Back then, symptom screening was easy. Every patient who has symptoms of SARS or is suspected of having SARS is immediately isolated and contact tracing is carried out.

Unfortunately, Dr. Sam said, this method is difficult to implement now. One way that can be done is to do tracking or tracing with a swab test.
