University of Seville discusses consequences of the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU) in cloister meeting.

Two months after the approval of the Organic Law of the University System, LOSU, the University of Seville, meets in the cloister this Monday, May 15 to address the consequences that this rule has on the Sevillian academic institution.

The rector of the University of Seville Miguel angel, Castro has convened an ordinary meeting of the cloister for this Monday in which he appears as one of the main items on the agenda the situation after the entry into force of the LOSU with which the rectory of the Hispalense does not agree.

This means that they will have to analyze the consequences of the norm that obliges the rectors of all Spanish public universities to be elected by weighted universal suffrage. And therefore it will mean that the process begins so that the Hispalense ceases to be the only Spanish public academic institution that does not use the democratic formula since the rector is chosen by the cloister, a group of about 300 people.

It will be necessary to see what Castro’s response is, who has shown on numerous occasions against this formula for electing the governing bodies of the university, and How do you start the procedure to change the statutes? and that the suffrage is a reality. It must be taken into account that the LOSU established a period of two years to adapt the statutes. A term that would expire in March 2025.

Controversy over the description

In addition, the meeting of the faculty also occurs at a time when an enormous controversy has been generated by the announcement of the Hispalense to begin the description of the affiliated centers Cardenal Spínola, CEU, and San Juan de Dios. Because after the statement sent by the University of Seville, enormous discomfort was generated in both centers and there was also a harsh statement from San Juan de Dios accusing Seville of being untruthful and tendentious. Both centers maintain that for the moment they remain attached to the University of Seville and that 75 places will be offered in Nursing and 820 in the CEU for the next academic year 2023/2024.

The Junta de Andalucía had to warn that the parties had to reach an agreement and the offer of degrees no longer appears on the website of the Single Andalusian District, for which data will not be provided until the General Conference on University Policy is held, scheduled for the end of May.

This is a matter that could come up at the cloister meeting this Monday that also has on the agenda, in addition to the rector’s report, the memory of the University’s ombudsman, the budget project for the year 2023 and a report on the teaching activity of the teaching staff and on the implantation of the experimental system of evaluation of the educational activity.
