A newly discovered galaxy will drastically change the way scientists view the universe. Astronomers from the University of Groningen and ASTRON published a study on the Milky Way-like galaxy on Wednesday.
It took 12 billion years for the light from the galaxy to reach us, but the galaxy already appears fully developed. That is special, because it means that it was already formed one and a half billion years after the big bang. Galaxies normally take much longer to do this.
According to the astronomers, the discovery means that their current view of galaxy development needs to be adjusted. The result shows that the structures that we observe in nearby galaxies and in our own Milky Way were already in place 12 billion years ago, ”says research leader Francesca Rizzo.
