University canteens are becoming more expensive, retirees are decreasing

The price of lunch in university canteens goes up. The reason is mainly the food prices. For example, at the Prague University of Economics (VŠE), the price of a main meal in one of the canteens has increased by six crowns before the holidays and by another three crowns since September, now fluctuating between 88 and 108 crowns. This is clear from the reply of the representatives of the universities of Prague. They did not rule out that food prices will gradually increase over the coming months due to inflation. As a result, the University of Chemistry and Technology (VŠCHT) has already experienced a slight decline in boarders.

The prices of lunch in the canteens reflect food and energy costs and vary from establishment to establishment. For example, VŠE has three operations. In Jarov’s canteen, the prices of main meals have increased by an average of six crowns before the holidays and three crowns since September 1. “Now the price of main meals without the student subsidy ranges from 88 to 108 crowns,” said school spokeswoman Věra Koukalová. According to her, the prices of meals in the canteen, which is directly part of the school, have risen by seven crowns since September. The pizzeria in VŠE will become about ten percent more expensive, she added.

Prices in catering facilities of the Czech University of Technology (ČVUT) also increased by a few crowns, school spokeswoman Kateřina Veselá confirmed. For example, the increase was from 108 to 112 crowns, she said. According to Jiří Macoun, director of the Colleges and Boards of the Czech University of Life Sciences (ČZU), it can be assumed that prices will continue to rise in the coming months in line with inflation. “The rising costs of energy, food and services are continually reflected in the sales prices. As a result, this means a slight decline in demand for the time being,” added Michal Janovský, spokesman for VŠCHT.

As for expensive energy, universities are preparing savings measures for canteens as well. According to the spokesperson for VŠE, for example, the replacement of energy-intensive technologies with more modern and lower-consumption ones, namely open refrigerators for energy-saving LED refrigerators, should be considered. “Another measure is the reduction of the number of freezers and refrigerators for raw materials and the initiation of regular supplies by the supply companies. The canteens will also save on heating, ventilation or lighting,” added the spokesperson for the CTU. teaching program, “she said.

Lunches have gotten more expensive due to rising food and energy prices in recent months also in nursery, primary and secondary schools. In elementary schools they are now mostly between 30 and 40 crowns.
