Universities of Maastricht and Hasselt are investigating whether the insertion of stem cells can speed up muscle recovery

The stem cell technology is at Maastricht University, which is leading the research. Professor of exercise physiology Bert Op ‘t Eijnde is leading the research at Uhasselt. “The technology of the colleagues in Maastricht consists of making stem cells from the body’s own cells. These are then introduced into the bloodstream via an IV. And those stem cells then travel to muscles that are damaged.”

But for that, damaged muscles are needed. And that is the work of the team at Hasselt University. Professor Op ‘t Eijnde: “We are going to do that research on laboratory animals, but also on young healthy people. We are going to impose a number of muscle strength exercises that cause minor muscle damage.” their repair work.

The entire project will receive 3 million euros in European money. The province of Limburg is allocating 80,000 euros for this research.
