‘Houthi drones over Saudi Arabia intercepted and destroyed’

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen has intercepted and destroyed ten drones belonging to the rebel movement, Saudi state television reports. The weapons-equipped drones were said to have been intended to attack coalition targets, in part in Saudi Arabia itself. It is said to be “civilian targets”, but what they would be has not been reported.

Yesterday, it was already reported that seven drones were intercepted over southern Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis, supported by Iran, have been fighting a civil war in Yemen for years with the government, helped by Saudi Arabia and its allies. Recently, missile fire and drone attacks have been regularly reported in southern Saudi Arabia.

Fierce fighting is also taking place on the ground in Yemen in some regions.

New course Biden

The United Nations and the United States have intensified their efforts to end diplomatically. Last month decided the US government to stop designating the Houthi rebels as a terrorist organization. With that, President Biden reversed a decision made by his predecessor Trump.

Earlier, Biden decided to stop supporting the Saudi Arabian offensive against the Houthis. Last week, however, the US Treasury did take punitive measures against two Houthi leaders in Yemen.

The Americans hope their efforts will bring the end of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen closer. The war, which claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, has been dragging on for years. Famine is rife in large parts of the country.
