Five people, including three members of the same family, died Thursday during a tornado in the US state of Alabama, where several regions have been placed under a state of emergency, authorities said. “I call on all those in the path of these tornadoes (…) to stay on alert,” urged Alabama Governor Kay Ivey.
Images of inclement weather circulated on social media, showing debris flying in the sky, trees on the ground and damaged houses.
In the locality of Ohatchee, three people from the same family who were in “a wooden structure” were killed, as was a person in a mobile home, the county medical examiner told AFP. Calhoun, Pat Brown. One person also died in Wellington, he added.
Calhoun County emergency services called on residents to “take cover immediately.”
The Calhoun sheriff’s office for its part reported “substantial damage” in Ohatchee and near Wellington. According to the poweroutage.us site, more than 35,000 homes in Alabama were without power as of late afternoon. Bad weather is expected to continue into the evening, officials said.
