United States against mentioning climate change in final agreement G20 | NOW

The United States does not want climate change to be mentioned in the G20 final agreement as a potential risk for economic growth, various sources report to the news agency Reuters.

Ministers of finance and bankers from nineteen countries and the European Union will discuss the main economic challenges during the summit in the Saudi capital Riyadh this weekend. These challenges vary from geopolitical tensions to planned trade agreements and sustainability issues.

A draft version of the final agreement has already been presented, although the G20 countries are still considering some issues. Among other things, they have come to the conclusion that the corona virus is not seen as a risk for economic growth, as long as the virus is properly monitored.

A diplomat at the G20 says Reuters that the United States is reluctant to accept climate change as a risk to economic growth. “Normally China also opposes this, but now it is primarily the US,” said the diplomat.

“Climate is the last stumbling block before the summit”, also tell another source Reuters. “And for now there seems to be no agreement.” The summit ends on Sunday evening.
