Nicu Marin, 44, with an extensive criminal record, was finally jailed after new legislation gave judges greater sentencing powers.

The father-of-five, who was found living in a terraced house in Leeds, has been jailed for 27 months.

He is now expected to be deported for the seventh time after serving half of his prison sentence.

Appearing at Leeds Crown Court, Judge Simon Batiste told Marin that Britain had enough “home-grown criminals” before warning him not to return to the country.

“You have to understand that you are not allowed to enter the UK and you must not return to this country. If you do that, the sentences will always be longer,” the judge told him.

Bashir Ahmed, the prosecutor, previously told the court that Marin has 20 convictions for 41 crimes, many of them for theft and fraud.

He said Marin was first deported in October 2015 but returned to the UK in 2016 when his name came out after he was caught shoplifting.

The Romanian was deported again in November 2016, but returned to the country via Holyhead two weeks later.

He was deported again but was removed from the UK twice before, in March 2017 and April 2018.

In November 2019, he was found living at an address in Chapeltown and received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

Marin then proposed to a woman in the UK last September before being arrested at his Beeston address in November.

He said he returned to the country last August via Dover and found a job.

The prosecutor added: “Since 2015 he has made a concerted effort and managed to enter the UK, entering through various ports in Ireland and Northern Ireland.”
