A United Airlines flight from Israel experienced severe turbulence. As a result, 7 people were injured, others were traumatized and alerted people at home.
Launch ABC7NY, Saturday (30/3/2024), several people had to be hospitalized after a United Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to Newark International Airport, New Jersey, was hit by turbulence. Then the plane diverted to the airport in Orange County, New York, on Friday (29/3/2024).
About 300 passengers and cabin crew were on board the flight. At around 6.45pm, strong winds and turbulence blocked the flight.
Witnesses said the plane was allowed to land in Newark after an 11-hour journey from Israel. However, the pilot performed a go around or aborted takeoff when they were about 750 feet from the ground.
They told traffic controllers that the plane experienced wind shear, which is a sudden change in wind.
Passengers said they started to get scared when the routine flight turned into a roller coaster. In fact, one passenger even sent a message to his partner.
“Oh, it’s really like Six Flags (amusement park ride),” said passenger Roi Gonen.
“My heart beat fast several times. I sent a message to my wife just in case,” he continued.
Gonen said that panic started to set in among the passengers.
“Two seats behind me, I saw a woman vomiting,” he said.
Due to running out of fuel, the pilot diverted the flight to Stewart International Airport in Newburgh. Then, paramedics came to the flight and treated more than two dozen people who were sick.
According to New Windsor EMS, seven passengers were taken to Montefiore St Luke’s Cornwall with minor injuries. Some of them reported experiencing motion sickness.
“There were 320 people on board,” said Michael Bigg of New Windsor EMS.
“We evaluated about 30 people and we took seven people to local hospitals just for observation, there were no serious injuries or illnesses, but most people wanted to be seen in the emergency room,” he explained.
Ambulances took the seriously ill to local hospitals, while planes refueled for a quick and relatively uneventful flight to Newark.
Passengers said it was an ordeal they would like to forget.
