Unions Call Off Mobilization for March 25th Demonstration against Pension Reform after Prefect in Dijon Prohibits Gathering

The demonstration scheduled for Saturday March 25 at 3 p.m. against the pension reform in the city center of Dijon has been banned by the Prefect of Côte-d’Or. The unions decided in response to cancel the mobilization.

The Prefect of Côte-d’Or Franck Robine decided to ban at the end of the afternoon of Friday March 24 the demonstration scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. in the city center of Dijon, for “taking into account the risks of disturbing public order” et “to allow the normal functioning of commercial activities in the city center”. The 4 main trade union organizations CGT, FO, FSU and Solidaires 21 are disappointed.

Franck Laureau, General Secretary Force Ouvrière de Côte-d’Or, explains the process: “The major demonstrations decided at the inter-union level are declared well in advance, but for the more local movements, we do it at the last minute. This time, the demonstration on Saturday, we declared it, and because it is declared, it is prohibited.”

There was an exchange despite everything, between the Prefecture and the inter-union on the modification of the course, according to Franck Loreau: “They offered to do the route upside down, but they pretended that we were going to disrupt the city center, we decided to cancel the rally.”

Franck Laureau declares “We agreed with the other trade unions to hold a press conference on Saturday at 3 p.m. to explain the risks incurred if we demonstrate, namely verbalizations or arrests.”

And in a joint press release, the trade unions also reacted: “Faced with the brandished threats of heavy financial penalties for the participants and increased police repression, our four organizations are choosing not to put people in danger, by canceling the demonstration on behalf of our organisations. The union leaders of our four organizations will still present themselves on Saturday March 25, from 3 p.m., Place de la République in Dijon to inform people who do not have information about the cancellation and hold a press conference.

While reinforcing the call for mobilization for the day of Tuesday, March 28 : “Finally, our four organizations are calling for massive participation in the strike and demonstrations on Tuesday March 28 to show the government the strength of the street! In Dijon, the meeting is set for 2 p.m., Place de la Liberation this Tuesday March.”

For the Prefecture, the reminder to watch for Saturday is clearly stated: “The police will be mobilized to ensure compliance with this decree”
