On Tuesday morning, a full alarm was sounded at the underground station Hauptwache, in the center of the German city of Frankfurt in the state of Hesse.
At 04.36 on Tuesday morning, the surveillance cameras captured an unidentified masked man dropping a hand grenade in a corner of the station.
On the loose
The Hauptwache was immediately closed and the police’s specially trained bomb squad was sent to the scene to disarm the grenade, writes German Bild.
It turned out to be real.
– We are now investigating whether it contained explosives that could lead to a detonation, says the police spokesperson to Storavisa.
Surveillance videos show that the man ran from the scene on foot, in the direction of Eschenheimer Tor.
Asking for tips
The grenade was transported to the Landeskriminalamt (LKA) in Wiesbaden – the criminal police in the state. It will now be examined for fingerprints.

The background to the incident is still unclear, but the police state that they are investigating in “all possible directions”.
They are therefore releasing photos of the alleged perpetrator, in the hope that tips from the public can move the investigation forward.
