Unemployment is growing mainly due to young people living at home who lose jobs | NOW

The Netherlands had 59,000 more unemployed in the past quarter than in the second quarter of 2019. The largest increase in unemployment was found among people living with their parents. Within that group, 39,000 fewer people were employed than a year earlier, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Friday.

The employment rate among 15 to 74 year olds fell from 68.8 percent to 67.9 percent. The decrease was greatest among people living with their parents. In the past quarter, the labor participation rate in that group was 62.4 percent and a year earlier at 66.9 percent.

The vast majority of this group consists of young people between 15 and 25 years old. Also, slightly more young people now live with their parents than a year earlier.

According to Statistics Netherlands, students and pupils in particular have lost their side jobs. These young people often have a flexible employment relationship and are therefore the first to lose their job in a crisis. There were fewer flex workers among school-leavers than a year earlier, but more had a permanent contract.

It is also noticeable that, compared to previous years, more young people would like to work more. Compared to the second quarter of 2019, there are 38,000 more young part-timers who want to work more hours. According to Statistics Netherlands, this year-on-year difference has never been so great since the measurement started in 2013.
