Understanding Stroke Symptoms: Tingling on One Side of the Body

CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta – Diponegoro University graduate neurology expert Dr. Sigit Dewanto H., Sp.N, FINS, FINA said that tingling which is a symptom of stroke usually occurs on one side of the body first, left or right, not both sides.

“Weakness or tingling in the face, hands and feet, usually one side first, then right or left. If there is tingling in all four, two hands, two feet, it’s not a stroke. Or just tingling in the hands, it’s also not a stroke,” he said in the RSPI Small Group Media Discussion with the theme “Handling Stroke with Advanced Technology” in Jakarta, Wednesday.

Stroke is a sudden or sudden disruption of blood circulation to the brain, usually caused by blockage or rupture of blood vessels in the brain. This causes oxygen and nutrient intake to be cut off to brain tissue, resulting in brain tissue becoming damaged.

Talking about symptoms, apart from tingling in the face, hands and feet, signs of stroke also include headaches, fainting or unconsciousness, vertigo or dizziness.

“The symptoms can vary, because our brains are like computers. So which one is damaged, that’s what causes the symptoms, such as suddenly not being able to hear, smell, forgetting,” he said.

In particular, headaches that are signs of stroke, usually have never been felt before by the patient, feel very intense, different from other headaches.

Other stroke symptoms include confusion, difficulty speaking, difficulty seeing, difficulty walking or balance problems and all of this happens suddenly. “It’s called a stroke. The symptoms always come suddenly. If there were previous symptoms, maybe it wasn’t a stroke, it was something else, for example a brain tumor,” said Sigit.

He said that currently strokes and heart attacks kill more than 15 million people per year. These two diseases are often experienced by individuals under 65 years of age and should be preventable.

Stroke in particular is known to have a high probability of sequelae or disability. “Other diseases may be able to recover completely, but with this stroke, many people are disabled,” said Sigit.
