Understanding Stroke Symptoms and Risk Factors: Insights from a Neurologist

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – According to a neurologist who graduated from Diponegoro University, Dr. Sigit Dewanto H., Sp.N, FINS, FINA, tingling symptoms associated with stroke usually occurs on one side of the body, either the right or left side, not on both sides at once.

Sigit Dewanto explained, “Weakness or tingling in the face, hands and feet usually occurs on one side first, whether on the right or left side. So, if someone feels tingling on all sides, for example in both hands and both feet, then it is likely “This is not caused by a stroke. Likewise, if only one part of the body, such as the hand, experiences tingling, that is also not a symptom of a stroke.”

Stroke is a condition that occurs when blood flow to the brain is suddenly interrupted, usually caused by a blocked or ruptured blood vessel in the brain. As a result, the supply of oxygen and nutrients to brain tissue stops, which can cause damage to brain tissue.

Apart from tingling in the face, hands and feet, stroke symptoms can also include severe headaches, loss of consciousness, vertigo (dizziness), and other symptoms.

Sigit Dewanto explained that stroke symptoms can vary depending on the part of the brain affected. For example, a person may experience difficulty hearing, smelling, or memory problems if the areas of the brain that control these functions are damaged.

Headaches associated with stroke are usually very severe and often have never been felt before by the sufferer. Other symptoms include confusion, difficulty speaking, difficulty seeing, difficulty walking, balance problems, and all occur suddenly.

Sigit Dewanto also noted that strokes and heart attacks are currently the cause of death of more than 15 million people every year. These two diseases often affect individuals under the age of 65 and should be preventable. Stroke, in particular, has a high risk of sequelae or disability.

“Other diseases may be completely cured, but strokes often leave disabilities,” he added.
