Understanding Lung Cancer: Symptoms, Types, and Risk Factors

LATEST MALANG – Lung cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the lungs. The lungs serve as a vital organ in the human respiratory system which is responsible for taking in oxygen from the air and expelling carbon dioxide.

Lung cancer can interfere with the normal function of the lungs and have the potential to spread to other parts of the body through the blood vessels and lymphatic system.

There are two main types of lung cancer, namely non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) and small lung cancer (SCLC).

As quoted from the cdc.gov page, NSCLC is the most common type, accounting for around 80-85 percent of lung cancer cases. Meanwhile, SCLC, although less common, is usually more aggressive and spreads quickly to other parts of the body.

Risk factors that can contribute to the development of this disease include smoking, exposure to second-hand smoke, exposure to harmful chemicals such as asbestos, air pollution, family history of lung cancer, and radiation exposure.

According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking is the biggest risk factor for lung cancer, although it can occur in individuals who don’t smoke.

Lung cancer signs and symptoms can vary depending on the stage and type. Some of the common symptoms that may appear include a cough that doesn’t go away, chest pain, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, coughing up blood, hoarseness, and recurrent lung infections.
