Understanding Chickenpox Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention: A Guide for Parents

RAKYAT.NEWS, HEALTH – Chickenpox is a contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus and is characterized by itchy, red bumps that develop into fluid-filled blisters. Although the disease is usually mild, it can be serious in certain populations, such as newborns, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of Chicken Pox usually appear 14-16 days after exposure to the virus and include fever, headache and general feeling of being unwell. The rash appears soon after, starting on the face, chest, and back, before spreading to the arms and legs. The rash develops into fluid-filled blisters, which eventually scab and heal.

The disease is highly contagious and spreads easily through the air or contact with infected fluids from the blisters. Schools and day care centers are common places for outbreaks, and it is especially important to keep children with active chickenpox away from other people until they have fully recovered.

Fortunately, there is a smallpox vaccine that is recommended for all children in Indonesia. This vaccine is usually given in two doses, the first injection is given at the age of 12-15 months and the second injection is given at the age of 4-6 years. This vaccine is very effective in preventing chickenpox or reducing its severity if it does occur.

If you or your child has Chicken Pox, there are steps you can take to reduce symptoms and speed up the healing process. Antiviral drugs may be prescribed in severe cases or for those at high risk of complications. Over-the-counter creams or lotions can help soothe the itch, and an oatmeal bath or cool compress may provide comfort.

Parents can prevent the spread of Chicken Pox by keeping the child away from school or daycare until all the blisters have peeled off. Avoid contact with people with active chickenpox, and wash your hands frequently to prevent spreading the virus.
