Jakarta, Beritasatu.com – Brain aneurysm disease is still not widely known among Indonesian people. In fact, this disease is a serious threat that can result in disability or even death.

According to Dr. Dr. Mardjono Tjahjadi SpBS(K), PhD, brain aneurysm is a condition where the walls of the brain’s blood vessels widen due to the weak structure of the walls. The larger the aneurysm, the thinner the blood vessel walls, and the higher the risk of rupture. When a blood vessel ruptures, blood will seep out and soak the brain.

“There is research in the US, if the brain is submerged in blood, 50% are fatal. Meanwhile, 50% of those who live will return to normal? No. 66% will be disabled,” said Mardjono Tjahjadi, a neurosurgery specialist at RSPI Pondok Indah to the media recently.

It was explained further, therefore, in commemoration of Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month which falls in September, Dr Mardjono Tjahjadi invited all Indonesian people to become more familiar with brain aneurysm disease.

Causes of brain aneurysms
Although the exact cause of brain aneurysm formation is still unknown, doctors have identified several risk factors that can increase a person’s chances of developing this disease. These risk factors include:

1. Smoking habit
Smoking can damage blood vessels, increasing the risk of an aneurysm forming.

2. Use of cocaine or amphetamines
These substances can damage the walls of the brain’s blood vessels.

3. The habit of consuming excessive alcohol
Excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute to the formation of aneurysms.

4. History of high blood pressure
People who have high blood pressure have a higher risk of developing a brain aneurysm.

5. Family history with brain aneurysm
If a family member has this disease, your risk may also increase.

6. Age over 45 years
The risk of brain aneurysm tends to increase with age.

7. Women
Women have a slightly higher risk than men.

8. Head injury
Severe head injuries can increase the risk of brain aneurysm forming.

9. Medical conditions with kidney disease
Some medical conditions involving the kidneys may also contribute to the risk of brain aneurysm.

When someone has three or more of the risk factors above, Dr Mardjono Tjahjadi recommends carrying out a screening examination such as MRI or MRA to detect the presence of a brain aneurysm.

Symptoms of a Brain Aneurysm
The symptoms that can appear in someone who has a brain aneurysm include:

1. Headache in the morning
2. Nausea and vomiting
3. Excessive sleepiness
4. Pain above or behind the eyes
5. Weakening of the cranial nerves

When a brain aneurysm ruptures, more severe symptoms can occur, such as a very severe headache, a sensation in the head like being hit by a hammer or struck by lightning, paralysis of part of the body, fainting, or even coma.

It is important to remember that brain aneurysms can be serious and deadly. Therefore, knowledge about the disease, its risk factors, and its symptoms is very important. If you or someone you know experiences suspicious symptoms, immediately consult a medical professional for proper diagnosis and treatment. Awareness of brain aneurysms can save lives.
