Understandable information about corona vaccines
In parallel to the ongoing European approval, IQWiG publishes brief information on the corona vaccine candidates. The first two brief information sheets are now online at Gesundheitsinformation.de.

It should start in December 2020: In Germany, too, the first citizens will be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. But how do the new vaccines work, what side effects do they have and what we do not yet know about them? The Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) wants to answer these questions for the vaccines against corona that are relevant in Germany: A few days after reliable data are available on the individual vaccine candidates, the institute already publishes easily understandable summaries of the most important results on its website Gesundheitsinformation.de.
The first two brief information about vaccine candidates that are expected to be offered for vaccination in Germany are already online: The vaccine BNT162b2 (manufacturer: BioNTech / Pfizer) was tested in a phase 3 study with 43,500 participants, the vaccine mRNA-1273 (Manufacturer: Moderna) in a phase 3 study with 30,000 participants. Phase 3 studies test the effectiveness and safety of vaccines under everyday conditions on many thousands of people. These studies are the mainstay for approval. For both vaccines, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently advising whether approval for Europe is recommended.
“Many citizens are overwhelmed with reading the relevant specialist information,” says Klaus Koch, head of the health information department. “The IQWiG therefore offers generally understandable information on the corona vaccines.”
