Uncertain Future for Residents of Harderringweg: Concerns Over Defense Plans

Residents of the Harderringweg between Lelystad and Biddinghuizen are concerned about the future. Defense is eyeing their living and working area as a possible location for a new barracks. The residents have informed Defense in a so-called opinion why their land should not be sacrificed. They don’t want to leave, but they especially find the uncertainty very annoying.

“Just before Christmas we received a letter from the municipality stating that Defense might want something with our land. Everything is then thrown upside down, but we don’t actually know anything yet,” says the worried Hans Paalman.

Defense has expansion plans and is looking for land for, among other things, an ammunition depot and a mega barracks. Suitable plots of land have been identified throughout the country. It is still unclear what will happen where. “We have not heard anything from Defense yet. I find that strange. I would like to know why they want new land and cannot expand at old locations,” says Maurice Prins. Prins has also sent an opinion. The municipality has already talked to the residents, but does not know what the plans are.

Residents talk about uncertain future

Farmer Jan Remijn was born on the Harderringweg and took over the farm from his parents. His sons also want to become farmers. “I don’t know where I stand now. I can’t do anything, I can’t expand, everything is at a standstill. I really want clarity,” says Remijn.

After the summer, or at the latest before the end of the year, it must become clear what will be located where. The residents of the Harderringweg hope to be able to talk to Defense before then.
