BACASAJA.ID – RAllergic hinitis is an allergic reaction that cannot be cured, but its symptoms and attacks can be controlled.

Therefore, patients are expected to be able to cope with the symptoms of rhinitis properly. If not, it will cause a decrease in the patient’s quality of life to cause sinusitis.

It was conveyed by dr. Rosa Falerina, Sp.ENT-KL, Ear Nose Throat Specialist Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga (FK UNAIR).

He emphasized that poor management of rhinitis will result in sinusitis. This is because the patient’s nasal cavity is blocked for a long time, causing poor circulation in the sinuses.

“Everyone has sinuses, sinuses are empty spaces in the facial cavity, such as on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, and forehead. If there is an infection in the sinuses, it’s called sinusitis,” said the lecturer who also serves at the Airlangga University Hospital (RSUA), Thursday (02/9/2021).

Then, continued dr. Rosa, if the sinuses don’t have good circulation, an infection will appear in the sinuses. If the case is mild enough to be given with medication. However, if it is heavy then the only way is surgery.

“So sinusitis can occur because of allergic rhinitis that is not cured properly and it could also be due to the flu that is not cured properly,” he said.

Allergic rhinitis patients who have developed sinusitis will receive treatment for three months.

If it does not improve then further examination will be carried out using a CT scan. However, if the fluid that comes out is excessive, then surgery is needed to clean the fluid.

“This operation is useful for clearing infections that cannot get out and cleaning infections that do not heal with treatment,” he said.

More dr. Rosa suggests allergic rhinitis sufferers can prevent further severity by staying away from allergens (allergies, ed).

Allergens for people with allergic rhinitis are pollen, mites, mold or mold spores, dust, animal skin or hair, sawdust, and latex.

“Actually, the easiest way to prevent allergic rhinitis is to stay away from the cause, so don’t let it get to sinusitis, the problem will be more complex later,” he concluded. (BYT/RG4)
