Hoeneß defends Tönnies: “It cannot be that you talk everything in ruins”
While criticism of meat manufacturer Clemens Tönnies is growing louder and the corona outbreak in his plant in Gütersloh sparked a broad discussion about meat consumption, ex-Bavaria President Uli Hoeneß now joins the entrepreneur.
In the program “Blickpunkt Sport” on BR, Hoeneß said on Sunday evening that one had to stand by errors and correct them. He also expects that from Tönnies.
Hoeneß is a sausage manufacturer himself, his own factory has been run by his son Florian for several years. He interpreted the criticism of Tönnies as “a sign of our society”: “When it’s your turn, there’s no stopping you.”
Reminder of your own mistakes
He had to experience this himself, said Hoeneß, in the case of Tönnies unpleasant memories woke up.
In 2014, Hoeneß was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for tax evasion of around 28.5 million euros. After serving half of the sentence, he was released early.
Meat entrepreneur Tönnies is currently under criticism. They have been worrying for days massive corona infections in his large company in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and the Housing and payment of the factory workers for negative headlines.
Hoeneß misses talk shows
If it were up to Hoeneß, his controversial opinions would be heard more often on television. “I would really like to go to one of these talk shows again, to ‘Anne Will’ or ‘Maybrit Illner'”, he explained in the “Blickpunkt Sport”. But he knew that he could not restrain himself if one or the other “stupid bullshit”. The subsequent shit storm was not worth it.
That, in turn, could never be blamed for Hoeneß. So he found clear words about a possible one in the program Salary cap for professional soccer players. “You can forget them,” he said. It is a “hypocritical discussion”. A fair distribution of television money is more important. After the Corona crisis, football would prosper again anyway, Hoeneß predicted optimistically.
