Ukrainian Missile Attack Hits Russian Ship ‘Jamal’ in Crimea: Report

In March this year, a Ukrainian missile attack in Crimea hit the large Russian amphibious ship “Jamal”, which suffered “critical” damage, confirmed the Central Intelligence Agency of Ukraine.

The large Russian ship “Azov” and the intelligence ship “Ivan Hurs” were also damaged in the attack, reports the channel “Telegram” “Astra”, citing its sources.

“Astra” reports that 18 missiles were fired at Sevastopol during the night from March 23 to 24, and the Russians managed to shoot down 11. The reconnaissance ship was hit by two missiles at the same time. There is no information about the victims.

According to the Central Intelligence Service of Ukraine, the missile strike was aimed at the 13th ship repair center of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol, where, among other things, the amphibious assault ship “Jamal” was on an anchor.

According to Ukrainian military intelligence, the nature of the damage to the Jamal is critical: a hole was punched in the upper deck, causing the ship to go aground, and the Russians are always pumping water from the vessel.

“Jamal” was commissioned in 1988. The ships of this project are the backbone of the Russian amphibious fleet. The media reported that “Jamal” took part in the operation to seize Crimea in 2014, but was undergoing repairs from 2017 to 2023.

The Russian reconnaissance ship “Ivan Hur” was also damaged in May 2023. It was followed for several hours by Ukrainian surface drones “Magura”. At the time, the Russian demonstration ship was on a mission 120 kilometers northeast of the Bosphorus.

The British Ministry of Defense has concluded that the Russian Black Sea Fleet has lost “functionality” as a result of the war. According to military analysts, the Russians have only seven large amphibious ships left in the Black Sea.
