Ukrainian Men in Germany Face Conscription to Join Armed Forces – Minister of Defense Announcement

“Ukrainian men between the ages of 25 and 60 who live in Germany and other countries must report to the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s conscription centers next year or face sanctions.” This was announced by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, in an interview with Welt.

“Ukrainians who live in Germany and are fit for military service should strengthen the Ukrainian army next year,” he added. The defense minister spoke of an “invitation”, but made it clear that sanctions would be applied to those who do not comply with this requirement, writes the German publication.

“We are still discussing what will happen if they don’t come voluntarily,” added Umerov.

The Ukrainian military wants to mobilize another 450,000 to 500,000 troops to repel the Russian invasion. But the financial and political terms of this step have not yet been specified. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the mobilization a “sensitive issue.”

Umerov states that justice is important. “In the future, those affected must know in advance how they will be trained, where and when they will serve and when they will be released.”

Welt writes that despite the ban, many Ukrainian men fled abroad to avoid conscription.

At the same time, the Ukrainian army faced the fact that the Russians were accelerating a ground offensive in the southeastern part of the country.
