Moscow has made the struggle for the Donetsk industrial zone a priority in the war in Ukraine that has now lasted nearly a year.

Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of Donetsk and three other regions although his troops did not control it completely.

Russian-backed separatist forces have controlled parts of Donetsk, including its largest city, since 2014.

Vugledar is located about 150 kilometers south of Bakhmut, where Russian forces have struggled to hold the city longer than any other city since the invasion began.
