Ukraine retakes Kyiv, Russian troops withdraw regularly

KYIV, KOMPAS.com – Ukraine said on Saturday (2/3/2022) that it had regained control of the Kyiv region.

Russian troops withdrew from around the capital and city of Chernigiv.

However, reported AFPrecent evidence has emerged of the possible killing of civilians in areas occupied by Russian forces during the invasion.

Journalist AFP saw at least 20 bodies on a street in the town of Bucha near Kyiv, including one with his hands tied, and the body of a missing photographer found in a nearby village.

“All these people were shot,” Bucha Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk told AFPadding that another 280 bodies had been buried in mass graves in the city.

While withdrawing from some of the north, Russia appears to be focusing on eastern and southern Ukraine, where it has held most of the territory.

“Russia is prioritizing a different tactic, namely retreating east and south,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak said on social media.

“Without heavy weapons we will not be able to repel (Russia),” he said.

But Ukrainian authorities offer citizens good news, claiming progress against Russia more than five weeks after the Moscow invasion sparked Europe’s worst conflict in decades.

“Irpin, Bucha, Gostomel and the whole of Kyiv region have been liberated from the occupiers,” deputy defense minister Ganna Maliar said on Facebook, referring to cities that have been heavily damaged or destroyed by fighting.

President Vladimir Putin previously ordered an attack on Ukraine on February 24.

Ukraine estimates 20,000 people have died in the war so far.
