Ukraine refused to hand over Mariupol to Russia

Authorities in Ukraine rejected Russia’s demand to hand over the city of Mariupol. This was stated by Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk, quoted by “Ukrainian Justice”.

“There can be no question of capitulation. We have already informed the Russian side about this,” she said.

We recall that yesterday the authorities in Russia urged Ukraine to respond in writing to proposals to open humanitarian corridors by 5am on Monday and rescuing the civilian population and infrastructure of Mariupol. The ultimatum was briefed on Sunday by Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev, head of Russia’s National Defense Management Center, quoted by ABC.

“Now the authorities in Mariupol have the opportunity to make a choice and side with the people, otherwise the military tribunal that awaits them is only a small part of what they deserve for their horrific crimes, which the Russian side documents very carefully.” said Mizintsev.

According to Russia’s plan from 10 a.m. on March 21, humanitarian corridors will be opened from Mariupol to the east and west. The National Defense Management Center is proposing that Ukrainian military “and foreign mercenaries” leave the city unarmed from 10 a.m. to noon, in which case their lives will be guaranteed.

Humanitarian convoys must then be allowed into Mariupol and civilians evacuated. Russian authorities have repeatedly accused the Ukrainian military (or as they call them Nazis and nationalist groups) of using the civilian population as a human shield.

A total of 7,295 people were evacuated from Ukrainian cities on humanitarian corridors on Sunday. Four of the seven planned routes are operational. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk, quoted by Reuters.

3985 people were evacuated from the besieged city of Mariupol in the city of Zaporozhye. The Ukrainian government plans to send nearly 50 buses to Mariupol on Monday for further evacuation, Vereshchuk said.

According to Ukrainian officials, up to 350,000 residents may remain in Mariupol; the Russian Ministry of Defense nominates 130,000 people.
